Welcome to the ZeroFold!

Music -- 5 Albums You've Never Heard Of
Bands come and go all the time, some you may remember a song from, some you may have never even heard of at all, but just because they aren't in the spotlight any longer doesn't mean they didn't create some kickass tunes while they were around. For the good of music fans every where, ZeroFold presents "Five Albums You've Probably Never Heard Of."

Soul Coughing: El Oso

Soul Coughing was always one of those bands that seemed to settle inbetween all the genres. Ruby Vroom was this band's debute album and it was dubbed as "deep slacker jazz" by the band's leader the always entertaining, Mike Doughty. While certainly there is a jazzy tip to their songs, there's also a flair of rock, electronica, and even hip-hop. Its an odd mix, but it pulled together flawlessly. El Oso is the peak of Soul Coughing's success, having the hit single "Circles" but still went relatively unnoticed by the general public. The album is just packed with tunes that you can't get out of your head. Unfortunately it was also the band's final album, but not all is lost. Doughty is back, on his own this time, and has a new album coming out in May 05.

Black Lab: Your Body Above Me

One of my favorite albums in my collection. Black Lab is probably most well known for their moderate hit, "Wash It Away" however, this album is packed with great radio songs that just never saw the light of day. "Time Ago", "Thin White Lie", and "Can't Keep the Rain" are just some of the tunes that you can't help but like. The future of Black Lab is very much up in the air right now. They had, what in my opinion was the best song on the first Spiderman soundtrack, "Learn to Crawl" and just recently had a techno-ish song on the Blade 3 soundtrack, yet they remain without a record label. Rumors have been swirling recently that they've finally latched onto a new label and are getting ready to finally release something new. If true, its probably largely due to the success of their latest single "Lonely Boy" which slid in at #28 on the >Top 50 Alt Rock songs of 04.

Sneaker Pimps: Bloodsport

Euro techno-heads named after a Beastie Boys referrence to how they got all those phat sneakers in the 80s. It doesn't get more obscure than that, however most folks have heard of these guys before. "Six Underground" off of their Becoming X Album hit the US and blew up for a time in the late 90s. However, like most techno-bands over seas they were quickly forgotten state-side. Their followup album, Bloodsport features some highly addictive tunes caught somewhere between Massive Attack and Moby. The title track, "Bloodsport" and the funky techno-trip, "Sick" highlight a rock solid album. The Sneaker Pimps are also on track for a new album coming out soon.

God Lives Underwater: Life In the So-Called Space Age

Tech-rock at its finest. Mega samples, huge riffs, and ear screeching electronica bury itself into this band's tunes. Most well known for the hit "From Your Mouth," Space Age also contained a couple of other hits/soundtrack favs - "Rearrange" and "Can't Come Down." GLU finally closed up shop, releasing a long in limbo final album last year.

Matthew Good Band: Beautiful Midnight

Ok so this album won't be as much of an unknown hit to you folks from Canada, but few people in the States have heard it before and thats a shame. Every song is killer and one of the most complete albums you'll ever hear. I'd bother to list out the highlights, but I'd end up eventually listing all the tracks. Though the band is no more, Matthew Good has gone off on his own and released a couple of solo albums. Though none compare to Beautiful Midnight, Avalanche is an amazing journey in its own right.
