Movies -- Silent Hill
|
Another video game sent to the big screen. Only this time, from the commercials at least it looks like they werent holding anything back....
That's true and its not. Silent Hill actually turns out to be one of the better video game to movie adaptations made, not that thats saying a lot, but hey its a step forward, and more than you can say for most. However, at its roots its basically a cliché horror movie thats not all that different than a lot of other ones out there. The acting is marginal, there's a lot of cheap pops, and the story is wishy-washy at best.
Anyways lets get into what its all about. A husband and wife (Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean) have an unusual adopted daughter, Sharon, who walks and talks about a mysterious town called Silent Hill in her sleep. Determined to find answers the mother, Rose, decides to take her there against the father's wishes.
Now before you jump ahead and say "Aha! the Father knows something..." no, he doesnt. He just thinks what any rational parent would, that Sharon needs medical help and that bringing her to this ghost town isn't going to help anyone.
So off they go and along the way mom and daughter run into some trouble with the police which leads to a high speed chase where both the cop (Cybill) and Rose end up in an accident just outside of Silent Hill. Of course Rose wakes up to find Sharon missing and begins running around the empty town looking for her, seeing flashes of a little girl running around corners, up stairs, and down alleys, until a siren goes off. A few seconds later all kinds of creepy stuff happens as the town pretty much burns down around her and freakishly deformed/burned people come after her.
In time these creatures basically just fade away and the town is rebuilt and Rose begins her search again, following clues her daughter seems to be leaving behind. She also meets up with the cop who had been chasing her and finds out that there are a bunch of people still living in hiding in the church.
Meanwhile, Sean Bean unable to get a hold of his wife, drives out to Silent Hill to find a police barricade has been setup. Apparently cops found his wife's jeep, but no sign of her or anyone else. Determined to find answers he begins to look into the past history of Silent Hill, a place few seem comfortable talking about.
From that alone you can probably start to piece together the rest of the story and what's really going on so I wont give too much more away. It has its moments, but when you finally hear all thats going on and how it all comes together you sort of say "All this...just for this?" *shrug*
For horror fans they'll like the blood and guts and few truly creepy scenes the movie throws out there. It is a decent film in that genre. For fans of the game they'll probably be satisfied with what made it to the big screen. For everyone else, there's not much of a point in seeing it.
