Movies -- Lucky Number Slevin

Know what a Kansas City Shuffle is? No? Well you'll figure it out within the first five minutes of Lucky Number Slevin, a slick flick that I like to compare to a dark version of Snatch.

Josh Harnett stars as a man of mistaken identity (that's ultimately not so mistaken) who's dragged into circumstances beyond his control. The man who they think he is, owes two large debts to rival mob leaders, the Boss, played by Morgan Freeman, and the Rabbi, played by Ben Kingsley. In between the lines lurks Bruce Willis who appears to be playing both sides off of each other while they have Harnett running in circles, but you can never quite figure out why. Of course it all comes back to the concept of a Kansas City Shuffle set in motion 20 years ago.

What Slevin does right is it keeps you guessing. I'm usually very good at picking out a plot's twist well ahead of time, but there were several instances that I totally missed this time. It also does a great job of weaving together awkard scenes where you thought something was missing the first time you saw them (and you were right!) to ultimately lead you to the final conclusion. It also does a great job of making you feel interested in Harnett and his quirky love interest, a fast talking Lucy Liu despite their seemingly odd calmness to the chaos around them.

Lucky Number Slevin makes Willis two for two this year, both in bad hair cuts and really good movies, and may just be Harnett's best performance of his career.
