Movies -- Date Movie

From a couple of the guys who helped write Scary Movie, comes Date Movie. With an absolute horde of movies to rip off and rip on this can't possibly go wrong can it?

Well yeah, it can.

As any out there comedy spoof it has its moments. Lines like "You're going to take me to China Town?" "China town? I'm going to take you to 134th street and beat you with a pipe" provide a chuckle as does the appearance of the worlds most famous child molester, but overall Date Movie is just a collection of unrelated scenes strung together to fill 90 minutes. Even more unfortunate is that the majority of these aren’t even funny.

Most of the movie steals its scenes from the Meet the Parents/Fockers movies, which I'm not sure was a great idea. The characters in those movies are already so far over-the-top that to take it to the next level they just become stupid. This is really the problem with the whole movie. It settles for going after things no more than a year or two old and most of which already were comedies to begin with instead of rewinding the clock a bit more and going after those true "chick flicks" that were supposed to be honest and heartwarming. That’s where the master of the spoof films came from.

The Scary Movie series was pretty funny, not because they ripped on goofball B-movies, but because they took on films that actually tried to scare you - Signs, Scream, 13 Ghosts, etc and dissolved them down to mere mockeries.

In addition Date Movie just seems to toss in outside films into the mix for the hell of it. Paris Hilton's Carl Jrs commercial slips in, so does Kill Bill, and a couple of celebrity reality shows.

Even when making a spoof comedy you still need a flow and that’s something Date Movie sorely lacks.
