Movies -- The Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm, starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger takes a twisted look at the writers of some of the most well known fairy tales such as, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella.

It's a great concept for a movie as the Grimm’s are actually con-men who set off village to village in French controlled Germany, to drive out evil spirits and the stuff of legends. Eventually they are caught by the French and sent to a village where they believe other con-artists are doing the same thing by stealing children. Only this time it isn't a setup.

Really there is a ton of potential in this movie. First of all you have two great actors as your leads, secondly you have a horde of tales that everyone knows, and finally the setup is perfect for a great adventure comedy. Unfortunately this movie gets in its own way and stuck between what it wants to be and what it should be.

The movie seems to twist everyone’s arm fitting in as many fairy tale references as it can. Little Red Riding Hood is the first girl we see snagged by a mysterious wolf. Hansel and Gretel pop up next leaving their trail of bread crumbs. References to Rapunzel and her isolation in a tower ends up leaving her as a villain. These would be great touches if they really flowed with the film, but instead they seem forced.

The real crime of this flick though, is its inability to decide if it’s a comedy or a drama. There are a few moments of slap stick, but then they'll follow that up with something far more serious before diving back to some goofy comedy. The Brothers Grimm was destined to be an off-beat comedy; the drama only screws things up. As a result a movie with a great deal of potential falls well short of my expectations.
