Movies -- Shaun of the Dead

A romantic comedy....with Zombies. Or so says the subtitle. Well the truth is, thats a bunch of crap. Its a comedy....with comically bad zombies. Yet, its still a great, hip, comedy using typical off the wall british laughs.

Want an idea of what to expect from this zombie flick? Meet our hero, Shaun. He's a slacker living with a couple of his former college budies. He has his morning routine of getting up, walking over to the store, tripping on the curb, getting a drink, and then piling on a bus with a bunch of other zoned out underachievers going to dead end jobs.

Flash forward to a later date when the world is full of slow moving, barely threatening zombies. Shaun wakes up flips on the tv quickly flashing past all the boring news reports to see what cartoons are showing before giving up and walking over to the store oblivious to the over-turned cars, flaming wreakage, etc, tripping over the same damn curb, and going to get his drink. Of course ignoring the fact that there are bloodstains on the glass and thinking nothing of nearly slipping on the puddle of blood below.

This is the kind of humor you'll get for the first hour or so of the movie and it really works. Its that quirky kind of laughs that made Monty Python so great. Of course the last 30 minutes or so of the film tries to dive into some serious issues and really loses the momentum built up through the first part of the flick.

That said, its still a highly entertaining movie who looks to be one of those cult favorites ala Army of Darkness/Evil Dead.
