Movies -- The Pick of Destiny

It's tough to tell if Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny, is a movie designed to sell records or the other way around. However, despite the stupidity involved there's something here that's just impossible to resist.

The opening scene of this musical comedy, sets the tone, with a young Jack Black rocking out at the dinner table and earning a beating from his ultra-religious father played by none other than, Meatloaf. Left alone in his room, JB prays to Dio for rock guidance and is sent on a quest to Hollywood to form the world's most awesome band.

Make no sense? Of course not, but then you never should have expected that to begin with.

So we flash forward 10 years or so with JB finally making it to Hollywood where he meets a man playing the guitar on a street corner who he believes to be a successful musician, Kyle Glass. Really Glass is a bigger nobody than JB, mooching off checks he gets from his parents and spending most of his day playing video games and smoking pot.

However, thanks to some help via a Ben Stiller cameo, they discover the secret to becoming rock gods, the pick of destiny. All they need to do is break into the Rock History Mesueme.

Along the way, JB trips on some mushrooms, KG chooses hotties over destiny, Tim Robbins nearly steals the show by playing a crazy man who lost his leg trying to get the pick years before, and ultimately they battle the devil, played by Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl.

It's a stupid comedy, but also fun in a way that you can't help but sink to its level of drug and fart jokes mixed in with vulgar songs....and really, isn't that what 'The D' is all about to begin with? Obviously folks who don't know what Tenacious D is, are probably better off staying away, but for fans this is an expected and welcome ride.
