Movies -- Ghost Rider

The short and sweet of it - Ghost Rider is just another comic book movie, that largely ignores the story that actually goes into the comic on the month basis.

Now one may look at its 3 week box office draw of nearly 95 million and assume Ghost Rider is, if nothing else, entertaining. Eh, thats debatable. More to the point would be that Nick Cage + hot chick + nothing else even marginally decent in theaters = box office draw.

Ghost Rider tells the tale of a young stuntman, Johnny Blaze, who sells his soul to the devil to save his fathers life. Of course in a typical twist of fate his father dies anyways and now Blaze must serve the devil's wishes and become the Ghost Rider.

Here's the big problem with the movie, although they have the cgi-ability to make Ghost Rider, they dont have the ability to really give him a personality so they just resort to using lots of special effects. Its hard to really care about a guy who pretty much can't be killed.

Ontop of that, they put him up against a enemy who's powers they never really explain or explore. Big deal, he's a goth looking guy who can touch people and leave them as dead husks. Such a slap in the face to the Blackheart of the comics.

Cage largely seems to be going through the motions, but I will give the actors some credit, they are more than willing to poke fun at themselves. In fact, the whole movie does. They know its a campy film which would be more in-line with the string of terrible comic-movies made in the late 80s/early 90s that it is with the Spiderman/X-Men/Batman of today.

Overall, unless you're a huge comic or Nick Cage fan, you're better off staying away.
